Emmerdale Star Lisa Riley Undergoes Thumb Surgery After Slippery Stool Fall
Lisa Riley Has Thumb Surgery After Slippery Stool Fall

Emmerdale actress Lisa Riley has disclosed that she was urgently admitted to hospital for surgical intervention following a severe domestic accident. The 49-year-old star, renowned for her role as Mandy Dingle on the long-running ITV soap, suffered what she described as 'massive damage' from a 'very bad fall' at her residence.

Accident Details and Injury

Riley explained that the incident occurred when she tumbled from one of her 'extremely slippy' bar stools. With a touch of humour, she clarified that she was completely sober at the time, preempting any potential jokes about intoxication. The fall resulted in significant trauma to her left thumb, specifically tearing the Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL).

This type of injury necessitates surgical repair when the ligament on the interior of the thumb's primary joint is ruptured. Consequently, Riley underwent an operation at Leeds General Infirmary to mend the damaged UCL.

Post-Operation Update and NHS Praise

Following the procedure, the actress shared a cheerful selfie on Instagram alongside her surgeon, Dr. Daniel Thornton. Another image depicted her leaving the medical facility with her arm supported in a sling. In her social media post, Riley effusively commended the National Health Service, labelling it 'incredible' and extending heartfelt gratitude to the entire medical team.

She wrote: 'OUR NHS @nhsengland IS INCREDIBLE…….I have to massively thank my specialist surgeon Mr Daniel Thornton at LGI LEEDS hospital and all the beautiful team, every single one of you who treated me this afternoon.'

Riley elaborated on the accident: 'I had a very bad fall over the weekend (no I'm sober) no drunk jokes—it was my extremely slippy breakfast stool and a woollen cardi—my left thumb took all of it. So today hence the massive damage I have had my operation, surgery, treating my UCL in my Thumb repaired.'

Support from Friends and Fans

The actress received an outpouring of supportive messages from colleagues and admirers wishing her a swift recovery. Notable comments included television personality Scarlet Moffatt, who penned: 'Sending love chick xxxx', and broadcaster Steph McGovern, who wrote: 'Oh no!! Sending love xx'.

Reflection on Personal Loss

This health update follows a recent emotional television appearance where Riley discussed the tragic passing of her close friend, former Strictly Come Dancing professional Robin Windsor. The dancer died in 2024 at age 44, after being dropped from the BBC competition due to an injury sustained at a cast party in Blackpool, which caused a slipped spinal disk and nerve issues.

Speaking on Loose Women, Riley revealed that Windsor experienced a profound 'downward spiral' in his mental health after leaving Strictly. She stated: 'Soon as he lost his job on Strictly, you saw this downward spiral in him and the light went off, the magic. His mental health started to struggle, he felt that he wasn't wanted anymore.'

Reflecting on their unique bond, she added: 'He is my one in a million friend... It's been really hard since he passed... With suicide, it's hard because you don't understand why they're going to take their life. I will always have him, he was my backpack in life, I keep him with me.'
