Kent Hospital Trust Delayed Alerting Health Officials on Meningitis Case
Kent Hospital Delayed Meningitis Alert to Health Officials

East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust failed to promptly alert health authorities regarding a meningitis case in Kent, acknowledging a missed opportunity for earlier notification. The patient initially sought care on the evening of Wednesday 11 March, but the trust delayed informing the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) until Friday 13 March, after a diagnosis was confirmed.

Trust Acknowledges Delay in Notification

Dr Des Holden, acting chief executive of the trust, stated: "Our first patient presented on the evening of Wednesday 11 March. We recognise there was an opportunity prior to diagnosis being confirmed on Friday 13 March to notify UKHSA." He added that while patient confidentiality prevents detailed discussion, the trust has maintained close contact with UKHSA since that Friday to manage suspected meningitis cases.

Outbreak Details and Impact

The meningitis outbreak has resulted in two tragic student deaths: 18-year-old Juliette Kenny, described by her family as "fit, healthy and strong" before her passing, and another University of Kent student. As of 12.30pm on Monday, 20 cases were confirmed, with three more under investigation, totaling 23 cases. This marks a decrease from 29 cases reported on Sunday, which included 20 confirmed and nine under investigation.

All patients affected in the Kent outbreak have required hospital admission, with nine admitted to the intensive care unit, where four remain. In response, officials initiated vaccination efforts for University of Kent students starting Wednesday 18 March.

Health Secretary's Statement

Health Secretary emphasised that the outbreak should not be "confused" for a "national incident," underscoring the localized nature of the response. The Independent has reached out to UKHSA for further comment on the handling of the situation.
