Kate Garraway Recalls Loved One's Sepsis 'Dying' Feeling

Kate Garraway, the well-known Good Morning Britain presenter, has opened up about a deeply personal and distressing experience during an emotional segment on the ITV daytime programme. She recalled a time when a loved one, while suffering from sepsis, expressed a terrifying sensation that they were going to die, a feeling that was not initially taken seriously by medical professionals.

Emotional Interview on Good Morning Britain

During the broadcast, Kate Garraway and her co-host Paul Brand engaged in a poignant conversation with grieving families who have lost loved ones to sepsis. They spoke with Melissa Mead, whose one-year-old son William tragically died from the infection in 2014, and Zaheer Ahmed, whose five-year-old nephew passed away in hospital from sepsis in 2022. These families are now uniting to campaign for a national inquiry into what they perceive as significant failings in the care provided for sepsis patients.

Kate's Personal Revelation

In a heartfelt moment, Kate addressed Zaheer Ahmed, noting the particular challenges when children are involved, but emphasised that even adults often face similar dismissals. She shared, "I've experienced it myself, someone I loved who had sepsis, who said, 'This is bad, I feel like I'm going to die,' and the medical professional didn't necessarily believe that at that point." While it remains unclear whether she was referring to her late husband Derek Draper or another loved one, Derek's own health struggles included a hospitalisation with sepsis during his prolonged battle with illness.

Derek Draper's Health Ordeal

Derek Draper, a former lobbyist, died at the age of 56 in January 2024. His health challenges began in March 2020 when he contracted Covid-19, which developed into one of the most severe cases recorded. In the years that followed, he faced numerous health crises, including a heart attack that led to his hospitalisation over the previous Christmas and New Year period. Kate Garraway documented their family's ordeal in two ITV documentaries, Caring for Derek and Finding Derek, which were praised for raising public awareness about long-term health conditions and caregiving.

Kate's Reflections on Grief and Loss

Following Derek's death, Kate has been candid about her journey with grief. She previously spoke about how Derek felt "trapped in his body" during his illness. A month after his passing, she recounted his final moments, saying, "I just wanted him to know I wasn't giving up because if you are trapped, as they believe he was, inside a body that was very damaged and failing, I didn't want him to think that we were departing him, that we were giving up." She added that it was a "huge honour" to be with him in those last hours, reflecting on the many who did not have that opportunity during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Good Morning Britain continues to air weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX, providing a platform for such important discussions on health and personal stories.
