The Princess of Wales revealed she has reduced her alcohol intake following her cancer diagnosis, during a visit to a London brewery on Thursday, March 12. Kate, 44, who underwent chemotherapy in 2024 and is now in remission, told brewery owner Hannah Rhodes: “Since my diagnosis I haven’t had much alcohol.” She added: “It’s something I have to be a lot more conscious of now.”
At Fabal Beerhall, part of the Bermondsey Beer Mile, Kate declined a beer or cider, opting for a soft drink instead. She turned to Prince William, patting his knee and saying: “But you like your cider, don’t you?” William then sampled a selection of beers and ciders, including those from Rhodes’ Hiver brand, which uses honey in fermentation.
Earlier, the couple visited Southwark Brewing Company, where they tried their hand at brewing. William wore black rubber gloves to add hops to the kettle, noting the smell was like horse feed. Kate climbed a ladder to stir the mixture. The couple also took part in a pint-pulling competition, which owner Peter Jackson declared superior to his own efforts.
After the brewery visits, the Prince and Princess donned RNLI overalls and caps for a boat ride along the River Thames to the RNLI Tower Lifeboat Station. They delivered cake and biscuits bought at Borough Market, and spent time with staff and volunteers, marking the 25th anniversary of the RNLI Lifeguards. William reflected: “Pubs are so important. Places for people and the community to come together.”
At the lifeboat station, the couple learned about the crew’s work, including responses to suicide attempts from bridges. Kate asked about volunteer recruitment, learning that a recent drive attracted 200 applications for 30 roles. She also spoke to members of Bridge Watch, a charity supporting individuals at risk of suicide, calling it “an incredible role to play.”
