Kai Rooney has enjoyed a standout season with Manchester United's academy, but a thigh injury will keep him out of the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester City. The 16-year-old son of club legend Wayne Rooney has also reportedly lifted the ban that prevented his father from attending his matches.
Youth Cup Final Absence
Manchester United's Under-18s face rivals Manchester City at the Joie Stadium on Thursday evening in the FA Youth Cup final. Kai Rooney, who played a minor role in reaching the showpiece, suffered a thigh injury in March that will sideline him. Despite this, his breakthrough campaign for the Under-18s has been impressive, and he was instrumental in the Under-16s winning the Premier League Shield earlier this term.
Father's Ban Lifted
Wayne Rooney had previously been barred from watching his son play, as Coleen Rooney revealed in 2024. Kai asked his father to stop attending grassroots tournaments because he was constantly mobbed by fans, preventing him from focusing on the game. However, as Kai has grown older, the stance has softened. In February, Wayne watched Kai play for the Under-18s in a 6-1 win over Derby County, and in March, he was in the stands during the Youth Cup quarter-final against Sunderland.
Kai made his first appearance at Old Trafford earlier this year, with both parents watching alongside interim first-team manager Michael Carrick and assistant Steve Holland. After the Under-16s won the Premier League Shield against Burnley in March, the family celebrated together, posting a photo on Instagram.
Future Prospects
The young forward can sign his first professional contract when he turns 17 and finishes school. Two months ago, he signed with Triple S Sports Management, the agency that represented his father throughout his career. Kai has been part of United's academy since age 11, and his famous surname initially proved more of a burden than a blessing.
Wayne Rooney's presence at games is now welcomed, and the family appears to have found a balance. Despite missing the Youth Cup final, Kai's future at the club looks bright.
