Jesy Nelson Shares Tender Moment with Baby Amid Health Campaign

Former Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson posted an endearing social media video on Wednesday, capturing her baby girl giggling as she received a kiss. The 34-year-old artist, who welcomed twin daughters Ocean Jade and Story Monroe prematurely in May 2025 with ex-fiancé Zion Foster, shared the clip on Instagram with a caption questioning why her daughter finds coughing so amusing, accompanied by a laughing emoji.

Devastating Diagnosis Revealed

Last month, Nelson disclosed the heartbreaking news that both infants have been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA1), a severe genetic neuromuscular disorder. This condition attacks motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, causing progressive muscle weakening. Type 1 represents the most acute form, with life expectancy typically under two years without medical intervention.

The video shows Nelson laughing along as her baby squeals with delight, offering a glimpse of joy amidst challenging circumstances. This follows her recent emotional revelation about bursting into tears upon seeing specially designed feeding chairs for her daughters. SMA1 causes significant swallowing, sucking, and breathing difficulties, necessitating feeding tubes and specialized postural support equipment.

Campaigning for NHS Screening Expansion

Alongside caring for her twins, Nelson is actively campaigning for the NHS to expand standard newborn heel prick tests to include SMA1 screening. She argues that earlier diagnosis through this approximately £1 test could have preserved her daughters' leg function. Her petition has already surpassed 100,000 signatures, triggering parliamentary consideration for debate.

Nelson has temporarily paused her music career to focus entirely on her daughters' wellbeing and advocacy efforts. During an appearance on Heart FM's Breakfast show, she emphasized that her children are her primary concern, stating she wants to concentrate on changing heel prick test protocols and strengthening her babies' health prospects.

Daily Challenges and Emotional Struggles

In candid interviews, Nelson described caring for the twins as an emotional rollercoaster, with some days being particularly difficult and others slightly lighter. She expressed how medical procedures leave her feeling like she's hurting her babies when they cry during treatments, a reality she never anticipated when becoming a mother.

"Every day is so full-on - I can speak about it, but I'll never be able to explain how intense it is until you see it," Nelson told the Daily Mail. "They're so tiny and I have to do things which I know are doing them good but at the time, when they're crying and screaming, it feels like I'm hurting them."

Understanding Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a disease that weakens strength by affecting spinal cord motor nerve cells, leading to gradual muscle wasting. Severity varies by type:

  • Type 1: Most severe, evident at birth, prevents sitting, often fatal by age five
  • Type 2: Intermediate severity, prevents standing
  • Type 3: Mild form, makes rising from sitting position difficult
  • Type 4: Symptoms appear in adulthood, typically twenties or thirties

Despite the grim prognosis, Nelson remains hopeful her daughters will defy expectations through treatment. "My girls are the strongest, most resilient babies and I really believe that they are going to defy all the odds," she expressed on Jamie Laing's Great Company podcast.
