Groom-to-be Hospitalised in Critical Condition During Pre-Wedding Celebrations Abroad

A family has been left devastated after a groom-to-be was placed into a medically induced coma during his stag do in Romania. Adam Maxwell, 35, was enjoying his pre-wedding celebrations in Bucharest when his health suddenly deteriorated, leading to a life-threatening medical emergency.

Sudden Onset of Symptoms During Celebration

Adam Maxwell had flown to Romania on Friday, March 14, to celebrate his upcoming wedding with friends. By Sunday morning, the situation had taken a dramatic turn when he began experiencing concerning symptoms. According to family reports, Adam started slurring his words and being sick before his condition rapidly worsened.

His friends immediately called for an ambulance, and he was rushed to a nearby hospital. Medical examinations revealed a shocking diagnosis: type 1 diabetes, a condition the family says Adam was completely unaware he had.

Critical Medical Complications Develop

Scans conducted at the hospital showed Adam's body was devoid of insulin, causing his blood sugar levels to reach alarmingly high levels. This led to his blood thickening significantly, creating additional complications. Doctors expressed grave concerns about potential pancreas and kidney failure as his condition continued to deteriorate.

Adam was initially moved to a high dependency ward where he received insulin treatment via drip. However, in the early hours of Monday, March 16, his brother Scott Maxwell received a distressing call from the hospital. Medical staff informed him that Adam's heart had stopped for over two minutes before they managed to revive him.

Medically Induced Coma and Ongoing Treatment

Following this cardiac event, Adam was transferred to the critical care unit of another hospital where doctors made the decision to place him in a medically induced coma. The 35-year-old, who is originally from Manchester but lives in Coventry with his fiancée, is currently on a ventilator to assist his breathing.

Adam, who has cerebral palsy, had planned to relocate back to Manchester to be nearer to friends and family after his wedding, which is scheduled for September this year. He remains in Romania accompanied by his brother after his friends returned home to the UK.

Family's Emotional Response and Fundraising Efforts

Laura, Scott's fiancée, expressed the family's emotional turmoil: "We're absolutely devastated that this is happening. It's all so surreal and everyone is very emotional about it. We're all worried and are hoping for the best outcome, really."

She added: "His wedding is not until September, but it's just a bit of a mess at the moment. I haven't even got the words to describe what's going on."

The family is now fundraising to cover the escalating costs of the situation, including flying relatives to Romania to support Scott and covering accommodation and daily expenses. Laura explained: "Nobody planned for this to happen, so we're fundraising to support his brother whilst they're over there. As it stands at the moment, it's so unclear about how long he's going to be out there. But we're not going to leave him in a foreign country on his own."

Adam is currently awaiting brain scans and is being treated with antibiotics after contracting pneumonia during his hospital stay. His family remains hopeful for his recovery while navigating the complex medical situation in a foreign country.
