Dr. Pimple Popper Discloses Frightening Stroke Incident During Television Production

Dr. Sandra Lee, widely recognised as Dr. Pimple Popper, has publicly revealed that she endured a terrifying stroke while filming her latest television series. The 55-year-old dermatologist, celebrated for treating patients with unusual facial and skin disorders at her clinic Skin Physicians & Surgeons in Upland, California, shared the harrowing details in a recent interview.

On-Set Medical Emergency Unfolds During Filming

Dr. Lee explained that in November, while filming Dr. Pimple Popper: Breaking Out, she began noticing unusual sensations that something was amiss. The season two trailer for her reality series depicts a dramatic scene where someone in her office calls emergency services, followed by an ambulance arriving at the medical facility. Staff were alerted to the severity of the situation, with Dr. Lee shown becoming emotional during a talking head interview segment.

"I notice it right now that I don't speak exactly the way I used to," Dr. Lee told People magazine regarding the stroke's impact. "You're really embarrassed to speak because you notice it. It is very stressful to open yourself up. Especially as a surgeon, you always want to show yourself coming from an area of strength."

Stroke Symptoms and Diagnosis Details

The medical crisis occurred during production when Dr. Lee initially experienced what she believed was a hot flash, accompanied by excessive sweating and a general feeling of restlessness. She reported shooting pains in one leg and difficulty navigating stairs. The following day, more alarming symptoms emerged, including her hand slowly collapsing when extended and challenges with articulation and enunciation.

After consulting with her father, also a dermatologist, who urged immediate emergency room attention, an MRI confirmed she had suffered an ischemic stroke. According to medical authorities like the Cleveland Clinic, an ischemic stroke occurs when a blood clot obstructs a blood vessel in the brain and can prove fatal.

"It was just a shock," Dr. Lee admitted about the diagnosis. "As a physician I couldn't deny that I had slurred speech, that I was having weakness on one side, but I was like, 'Well, this is a dream, right?' What essentially happened is I had a part of my brain that died."

Underlying Causes and Long-Term Consequences

Dr. Lee attributed the stroke to uncontrolled blood pressure and cholesterol levels, compounded by significant stress from managing her patients and television commitments. She described the experience as "a blessing in disguise" that serves as a reminder to prioritise self-care.

The television personality spoke candidly about the stroke's enduring effects on her daily life, expressing concern about diminished control and grip strength in her left hand. "If I feel like I'm not at my best—it's very scary," she confessed.

Career Background and Upcoming Television Project

Dr. Lee gained prominence through the TLC reality series Dr. Pimple Popper, which aired from 2018 to 2023, following substantial online popularity from posting extraction videos. She began uploading content to YouTube in 2010 and increased her activity in 2015 after noticing growing interest in her Instagram clips.

Her new series, Dr. Pimple Popper: Breaking Out, airs on Lifetime, with the first season having premiered last year. The second season is scheduled to debut on Monday, April 20 at 9pm. Dr. Lee is married to fellow dermatologist Jeff Rebish, with whom she shares two sons.
