DNA Test Uncovers 40-Year Secret of Babies Switched at Birth

DNA Test Exposes 40-Year-Old Hospital Error in Buenos Aires

A routine DNA ancestry test has led to the shocking discovery of a family mystery spanning over four decades, revealing that two women were switched at birth in a Buenos Aires hospital in 1986. The case, which only came to light in 2024, has upended the lives of both women and their families, prompting a legal investigation into the circumstances of the error.

The Discovery That Changed Everything

Paula, a lawyer based in Miami, initiated the investigation after a standard genetic ancestry test showed inconsistencies with her presumed biological family. The results indicated no biological link to the parents who raised her, leading to repeated tests that confirmed the same outcome. Disturbed by the findings, Paula confronted her parents, who were unable to provide an explanation, and the family sought legal assistance in Argentina.

Lawyer Ignacio Leguizamón Peña took on the case in the civil court of Buenos Aires, launching an investigation that would trace the origins of the switch. The focus turned to the Italian Hospital in Buenos Aires, where both women were born on March 22, 1986, just 13 minutes apart.

Uncovering the Hospital Records

Investigators requested hospital records for that day, but officials initially reported no births, explaining that deliveries before a shift change were logged under the previous date. Records for March 21 showed eight births, with the seventh and eighth babies delivered only minutes apart and weighing nearly the same, both attended by the same midwife.

Driven by a "gut feeling", the lawyer focused on tracing the eighth baby born that day. Using birth certificates, investigators identified Gabriela, who had been raised in the Morón district on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Contact was made, and the family histories were compared, revealing striking parallels.

The Emotional Reunion and Legal Fallout

When the lawyer visited Gabriela's home, he met her mother—who, unbeknownst to her, was Paula's biological mother. After initial hesitation, she agreed to DNA testing upon seeing a photograph of Paula. Meanwhile, Gabriela had independently confirmed through genetic testing that she was not biologically related to her adoptive parents.

DNA results from the United States confirmed a match between Paula and Gabriela's respective biological families, proving the switch at birth. The lawyer arranged a meeting between both families in a Buenos Aires shopping centre, marking the first time Paula and Gabriela met their biological parents. "After forty years, being confronted with a new reality profoundly changes the entire family structure," the lawyer emphasised, noting that Gabriela "cried inconsolably" upon learning the truth.

Ongoing Investigations and Legal Actions

Both women, now adults with their own families, have been deeply affected by the discovery, along with their children and wider relatives. The families have filed a legal complaint to determine how the switch occurred, including allegations related to identity suppression.

The case has been escalated to the Comodoro Py federal courts under prosecutor Carlos Stornelli, with authorities investigating potential criminal responsibility, such as identity-related offences. A raid at the Italian Hospital seized archival material, including staff lists from 1986, as officials examine whether members of the neonatology team were involved.

Prominent lawyer Fernando Burlando has joined the legal team, describing the case as involving "very complex" circumstances and significant harm. Efforts are now focused on identifying those responsible for the error or alleged negligence, as the families seek justice for the decades of confusion and emotional turmoil.
