Nathan Morris, whose daughter Zoe died from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in 2017, appeared on BBC Breakfast with his wife Laura to discuss their heartfelt fundraising mission and the symbolic significance of his upcoming endeavour.
A Father's Promise to Carry His Daughter
Nathan Morris explained that he will wear a weighted vest as he ascends the highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales: Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon. The vest is precisely calibrated to match the weight of his daughter Zoe at the time of her passing. "It's the weight Zoe was when she passed. The idea is I'm carrying her through the whole challenge," Nathan told presenter Naga Munchetty during the interview.
The Journey Through Grief and Bereavement
Nathan and Laura shared their painful journey, beginning with Zoe's diagnosis at just four months old. She endured eighteen months of intensive treatment before tragically passing away at twenty-one months in 2017. "We've kind of been going through that journey of child bereavement and what that looks like and journeying through that together," Nathan reflected. The couple emphasised that grief is a constant companion, with Nathan adding, "Grief is something that you carry every day. And bereavement is something that you carry every day."
The weighted vest serves as a powerful metaphor for this enduring burden. "It also represents the fact that we, as well as other people who've been through grief and bereavement, whatever that bereavement looks like, are walking with that every day," Nathan poignantly stated.

In response to their loss, Nathan and Laura established a memorial fund dedicated to raising money for research into childhood leukaemia. "In that process we set up a fund in memory of her to raise funds for research into the area of childhood leukaemia," Nathan explained. Laura highlighted their dual mission: "We really want Zoe's legacy to be one really where we're addressing the need for more fundraising and for more funds. But also we're kind of keeping her memory alive through what we're doing, the challenges we do, the money that we raise into infant leukaemia."
Insights on the Grieving Process
When asked what they have learned about grief, Laura offered a nuanced perspective. "I think with the grieving journey, it's different for everybody. But I think one of the things is it's about moving forwards and not moving on with grief," she said. This distinction underscores their approach to honouring Zoe's memory while continuing to live purposefully.

He is being supported by friend Martin Hibbert, a survivor of the Manchester Arena bombing who suffered a spinal cord injury when Salman Abedi detonated a device at an Ariana Grande concert in May 2017.
