Coronation Street Star Beverley Callard Finishes Radiotherapy

Beverley Callard Completes Radiotherapy Treatment

Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard has announced that she has finished her radiotherapy treatment following a breast cancer diagnosis in February. The 69-year-old actress shared the news in an emotional Instagram video, marking the end of ten sessions of radiotherapy for early-stage breast cancer.

In the video, Callard said: "I've done it, I've just finished my last radiotherapy session, fingers crossed. That was number ten for me and lots of people have to have lots more, I know that. But for now, that's finished so hopefully, don't know for sure, but hopefully I won't need any more."

Emotional Milestone and Future Appointments

Callard admitted feeling "a bit numb" and "too tired" to celebrate the milestone. Her husband Jon McEwan, who filmed the video, encouraged her with: "Positive thinking, darling, that's it."

The actress continued: "To be honest, I feel a bit numb. Yesterday I really struggled, but today I've been fine. I've got to see the professor again in two months and then I'll know a lot more and mammograms and oncologists and all that, but radiotherapy is finished for now, so I'm really thrilled."

She added: "I'm not going to celebrate tonight, we're too tired, we can't be bothered. I'm going to put scruffy clothes on and just sit and watch TV with a cup of tea."

Support from Fans and Friends

Famous friends and fans celebrated Callard's update in the comments. Loose Women's Denise Welch wrote: "Woohoo!!!" Doctor Who showrunner Russel T Davies added: "Well done darling!" One fan commented: "Well done, you're so strong and inspiring, just relax and enjoy the soaps." Another said: "I am so happy for you Beverley. You are always so positive and caring towards others going through their own cancer journey. Enjoy your cuppa and have a lovely weekend, Jon is incredible too btw."

Callard's Career and Health Journey

Callard is best known for her role as Liz McDonald in Coronation Street, which she played on and off from 1989 to 2020, appearing in more than 2,000 episodes. In 2020, she took part in I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! and finished in fourth place. Last year, she returned to the jungle to film I'm A Celebrity... South Africa but was forced to leave after collapsing.

Reflecting on that experience, Callard said: "Of course, I didn't know then that I had cancer, but I just knew that it was the last couple of days there that I hadn't felt very well. I went into the Bush Telegraph and apparently I lost consciousness for a little while. I just wasn't feeling myself." She added: "But I will beat this. I will beat it."

The actress and her husband Jon moved to Ireland earlier this year after she took the role of Lily Patterson in Irish soap opera Fair City.
