Carol Kirkwood's Weight Loss Transformation Triggered by Health Crisis
BBC Breakfast's beloved weather presenter Carol Kirkwood has revealed the unexpected catalyst behind her significant weight loss journey, coinciding with her departure from the broadcaster after more than a quarter of a century. The 63-year-old star, known for her curvy figure and candid discussions about body image, experienced a dramatic physical transformation following a serious health scare at the beginning of 2025.
Unforeseen Illness Sparks Lifestyle Overhaul
Kirkwood suffered from what she described as a "terrible" bout of food poisoning that not only caused her to lose approximately one and a half dress sizes but fundamentally reshaped her relationship with food and wellness. The presenter disclosed that the illness led to a complete reassessment of her daily habits and eating patterns, marking a pivotal moment in her approach to nutrition.
"Afterwards, I just ate two slices of toast for two days and I wasn't hungry," Kirkwood explained in an interview with OK magazine last year. "I'm a snacker. I love chocolate, a glass of wine, crisps, and I thought, 'Right, you don't need all this food'. Now I eat when I'm hungry rather than just eating because I can."
From Size Secret to Wardrobe Revival
While keeping her exact weight under wraps, humorously referring to it as "a state secret," Kirkwood confirmed she now comfortably wears a size 10, occasionally fitting into an eight. This change has allowed her to rediscover her extensive wardrobe of television outfits that had previously been stored away when she could no longer wear them.
"I've got lots of clothes from years of doing telly. When I couldn't get into them, I put them away. Now I can," she shared. "It feels like I've got a whole new wardrobe, but I don't. It's old clothes that I'm wearing again."
Finding Dietary Balance Without Deprivation
The presenter emphasized that her new approach centers on balance rather than restriction, marking a departure from previous dieting attempts. "I've done every single diet going but now I'm not depriving myself of anything," Kirkwood stated. "If I want a piece of chocolate, I'll have it, but then I actually don't. It's like somebody's flipped a switch in my head."
Her daily routine begins at 2:45 AM for BBC Breakfast commitments, followed by healthy snacks like apples or bananas by 9:30 AM if needed. After her shift, she enjoys meals such as toasted pitta with rocket, tomatoes, sweetcorn, peppers, and chicken, or evening options like pitta with hummus or peppers with hummus.
Dispelling Weight-Loss Injection Rumours
Kirkwood directly addressed speculation about using pharmaceutical weight-loss aids, stating she received emails suggesting she was "obviously" using such methods. "Each to their own. If somebody wants to do that, I'm not going to judge them - it's their bodies, their life - but I'm glad I'm doing it this way," she insisted, affirming her natural approach to weight management.
Prioritizing Personal Life After BBC Departure
The lifestyle changes coincide with Kirkwood's decision to leave the BBC after 25 years, including her role as main weather presenter on BBC Breakfast since 2010. She explained her departure stems from wanting to dedicate more time to her husband, Steve Randall, whom she married in 2023.
"I love my job, I've loved working at the BBC, but I love my husband more than my job," Kirkwood told presenters Sally Nugent and Jon Kay. "We only got married a couple of years ago and we're ships that pass in the night so I'm so looking forward to [spending more time together]."
Throughout her distinguished career, Kirkwood became a household name not only through weather presentations but also via appearances at Wimbledon, the Chelsea Flower Show, Royal events, The One Show, and her participation in Strictly Come Dancing in 2015, where she reached week eight with partner Pasha Kovalev.
