A British-trained medical professional, who had travelled to Gaza to provide critical humanitarian aid, has been killed in an Israeli airstrike. Dr Ahmad Al-Rahawi was volunteering his medical expertise in the conflict-ravaged region when the strike occurred.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has confirmed it is supporting Dr Al-Rahawi's family following the tragic incident. A spokesperson stated, "We are providing consular support to the family of a British man who has died in Gaza and are in contact with the local authorities."
Dr Al-Rahawi's death highlights the extreme dangers facing medical personnel and humanitarian workers in Gaza. The region has seen intense bombardment since the conflict reignited following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7th, which resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli casualties.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with local health officials reporting the Palestinian death toll has surpassed 37,000. International medical organisations have repeatedly raised alarms about the targeting of healthcare facilities and workers, describing Gaza's health system as "on its knees".
This incident adds to the growing number of aid workers who have lost their lives while attempting to provide essential services amidst the ongoing hostilities.
