Beverley Callard: 'dreadful reaction' to new medication

Beverley Callard has revealed she suffered a "dreadful reaction" to new medication while awaiting results from recent stomach tests amid her cancer battle. The 69-year-old actress, best known for playing Liz McDonald in Coronation Street, shared the update in a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday evening.

Awaiting biopsy results

Callard, who announced her breast cancer diagnosis earlier this year, said she is still waiting for results from biopsies taken from her stomach. "Still no results from the biopsies from gastro. So, I'm just waiting and waiting, which is driving me mad," she said.

She explained that her consultant had planned to prescribe three medications to treat the problem, but one clashed with another she is already taking. "And, then had a dreadful reaction to the medication. One medication clashed with another one that I'm already on. And boy, I was so ill yesterday. I've stopped taking the one that caused the problems, and I've been much better today," she added.

Back to work and family support

Despite the setback, Callard said she is due back on set at Fair City tomorrow, where she plays Lily Patterson. She added: "So, back at work tomorrow. I've had my nails done this afternoon. You know when you think, 'cannot be bothered to do it, but I've done it.' So, yeah, I'm still waiting, so that's the news."

She ended her update on a positive note, praising her mother-in-law Crystal and husband Jon McEwan. "But Crystal, Jon's mum, is having a mega time. She's loving it! Yesterday, Jon was looking after both of us. He's definitely a keeper, yes, he is indeed!"

Fans offered support, with one writing: "It is so hard waiting for results isn’t it. We have been there many times. I hope that the saying “no news is good news” is really true for you. Love to you all." Another said: "Beverly I'm so sorry to hear you were poorly yesterday and still waiting for the results of your biopsy please God you'll get the results tomorrow...Sending you and John lots of love."

Recent health updates

Just before the weekend, Callard told fans she had been to hospital and still had not received biopsy results, but was told there was "a lot of erosion in my stomach and chronic inflammation." She said the consultant planned to give her three medications, "two antibiotics and one that sort of protects the stomach."

Earlier this month, the actress, also known for playing Flo Henshaw in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, revealed an ambulance had to be called when she lost consciousness on set at Fair City. She said: "I recovered and felt fine again but I can't explain what it was. I was boiling hot. I seemed to lose 10 minutes but I don't know why. I was checked out by the ambulance men and everything and they were happy to let me come home as long as I rested."

She added: "But aside from that, I don't know what's going on. But I'm at the hospital again next week, so I'll probably know more, and I'm awaiting the results of these other tests and the biopsies they've taken from my stomach. So, that's it really. As I say, I feel a bit of a fraud, but the dogs know I'm poorly, they won't leave me alone again. So, there we go. If anybody else has had this, please let me know, because I don't know what's going on with me at all. Lots of love."
