BBC Breakfast paused its regular programming on Monday morning to broadcast an emotional video message from the Princess of Wales, Catherine, following her completion of the National Three Peaks Challenge. The challenge, undertaken in support of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, aimed to raise awareness about life beyond a cancer diagnosis and the importance of holistic care.
Princess Kate's Personal Motivation
In the video shared by Kensington Palace, Catherine explained her reasons for taking on the gruelling challenge. "Lots of people have asked me why I'm doing this challenge, and partly it's personal. I'm so grateful to be here, to be strong enough to walk these hills. But, more importantly, it's to give something back, and acknowledge, really, all the incredible work going on up and down this country," she said. The Princess, who underwent cancer treatment in 2024 and announced she was in remission earlier this year, described the challenge as an opportunity to "explore life beyond diagnosis and to give something back."
The National Three Peaks Challenge
Catherine completed the challenge over the weekend, climbing Scafell Pike in England, Ben Nevis in Scotland, and Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) in Wales. The feat involved approximately 23 miles of walking, more than 3,000 metres of climbing, and hundreds of miles of driving between each mountain. At the finish in Wales, she was joined by her husband, the Prince of Wales, their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, as well as her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, and her brother James.
Heartfelt Statement on Cancer's Impact
Kensington Palace also released a smiling photo of Catherine at the summit of Ben Nevis, accompanied by a heartfelt statement. "Cancer doesn't just affect the body. It changes how you think and feel and profoundly affects every aspect of life," she wrote. The Princess continued: "I know this personally, and that the journey through and beyond treatment requires more than medicine alone." She emphasised the need for holistic cancer care, saying, "Through this challenge, I want to raise awareness for the deeper impact of serious illness and the importance of holistic healthcare."
Raising Awareness for Holistic Care
Catherine noted that every cancer patient's experience is different and stressed that a whole-person approach to treatment can help people maintain their wellbeing, resilience, and quality of life throughout diagnosis and recovery. The challenge was organised to support the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, with funds helping more patients benefit from holistic care alongside medical treatment.
A Message of Support
Concluding her message, Catherine offered support to others affected by cancer, writing: "Together, we can stand alongside everyone navigating life with cancer, ensuring no one faces this disease feeling unseen or unsupported." She signed off with the words: "Please know you are not alone." The BBC Breakfast segment highlighted the Princess's determination and the broader impact of her fundraising efforts.
