Anthea Turner's Painful Rotator Cuff Injury After Pajama Slip
Television personality Anthea Turner has opened up about suffering a "nightmare" injury that left her in significant pain and required surgical intervention. The former Blue Peter presenter, aged 65, detailed how she tore the tendons in her shoulder, specifically a rotator cuff tear, after an unfortunate accident at home.
The Accident and Diagnosis
Turner explained that the injury occurred on December 30th when she "slipped on the back of my PJ's running down stairs." Initially, she believed the discomfort was bursitis and even traveled to Paris for New Year's and Tanzania afterward. However, upon returning home, persistent pain prompted a visit to a specialist.
An MRI scan revealed the severe truth: a complete rotator cuff tear with no tendons attached. Turner described receiving the diagnosis as "the worst news" and admitted her first thought after swearing was, "How am I going to blowdry my hair?"
Surgery and Recovery Process
Anthea Turner opted for private treatment at The Wellington Hospital in London, where she underwent successful surgery to repair the tear. She is now recovering at home with what she humorously called "a 'party bag' of killer drugs" to manage the pain.
The recovery protocol includes wearing a sling for three weeks, followed by a dedicated rehabilitation program. Turner emphasized her commitment to "working my t**'s off to rehab and strengthen my arm" with the specific goal of being able to hold a hairdryer again.
Daily Challenges and Support System
During her recovery, Turner has faced numerous practical difficulties. She noted that using only her left hand has proven challenging, with tasks like putting on socks becoming a "nightmare" and even tying up her hair impossible without two hands. She joked about her appearance, saying she looks like "Worzel Gummidge" due to her curly hair being difficult to manage.
Turner expressed gratitude for her millionaire fiancé Mark Armstrong, who has been providing assistance, though she quipped that "friends are feeling far more sorry for him than me, I'm a terrible patient." She also thanked her doctor, Mr. Peter Reilly, promising to follow medical advice diligently.
Personal Reflections and Background
The injury revelation comes after Turner recently discussed her personal life, including why she hasn't yet married Armstrong despite their 2019 engagement. She reflected on her previous lavish 2000 wedding to Grant Bovey, which became infamous for the "Flake Gate" promotional controversy involving Cadbury's Snowflake bars.
Turner described feeling "bamboozled" into that extravagant ceremony and noted that big "flash" weddings are falling out of fashion. She now prefers the idea of a smaller, more intimate ceremony.
In recent interviews, Turner has spoken positively about finding "a second chance at love" with Armstrong after two failed marriages. She remains close with her ex-husband Grant Bovey's children and proudly announced becoming a grandmother, affectionately called "Granny Anth."
Turner also addressed past controversies, including being labeled a "homewrecker" after her relationship with Bovey began while he was married. She acknowledged the pain caused during that period but emphasized moving forward with her current relationship and recovery journey.
