PoTS Condition Explained After Shirilla's Netflix Claim

Netflix's latest true crime documentary, The Crash, has sparked widespread curiosity about a medical condition known as PoTS, or postural tachycardia syndrome. The film, currently the platform's number one offering, delves into the case of Mackenzie Shirilla, who was convicted of murder after a car crash that killed two passengers.

What Happened in the Crash?

In 2022, a car driven by then-17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla slammed into a wall at 100 mph, killing Dominic Russo, 20, and Davion Flanagan, 19. Shirilla survived with serious injuries. Initially considered a tragic accident, investigators later charged her with murder, arguing the crash was intentional. A bench trial agreed, sentencing her to two concurrent 15-years-to-life terms.

The Crash marks Shirilla's first public statement. According to Tudum, the crew had only one hour with her, during which her lawyer remained present. Shirilla maintained she has no memory of the crash and cited a 2017 PoTS diagnosis, claiming it causes blackouts. Her legal team unsuccessfully used this as a defence. She stated, 'The most logical speculation seems to be a medical emergency.'

What Is PoTS?

Postural tachycardia syndrome, or PoTS, is a condition where the heart rate increases rapidly upon standing from a seated or lying position, often causing dizziness or lightheadedness. The NHS notes there is no cure, but lifestyle changes and medication can manage symptoms. Effects vary: some experience mild discomfort, while others face significant daily challenges.

Common Symptoms of PoTS

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Noticeable heartbeats (palpitations)
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Shaking and sweating
  • Fainting or near-fainting

Additional Symptoms

  • Digestive issues: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, abdominal pain
  • Headaches and vision problems: blurred or tunnel vision
  • Purple discolouration of hands and feet
  • Weakness, extreme fatigue, poor exercise tolerance, sleep disturbances
  • Cognitive difficulties: brain fog, memory and concentration issues

Symptoms may worsen in the morning or fluctuate daily. The exact cause remains unclear, but recommended lifestyle adjustments include increased fluid intake, small meals low in refined carbohydrates, and compression garments. Medications can also help control symptoms.

Driving and PoTS in the UK

In the UK, drivers must inform the DVLA of any medical condition affecting driving ability. According to Gov.UK, this includes tachycardia causing sudden dizziness or fainting within the last 12 months.

The Crash is currently streaming on Netflix.
