Lucy Davis, best known for playing Dawn Tinsley in the BBC sitcom The Office, has revealed she has been diagnosed with incurable stage four breast cancer. The 53-year-old actress shared the news in a candid Instagram post on Tuesday, August 11.
Davis, daughter of comedian Jasper Carrott, said the cancer has metastasized to her bones, including her spine, right hip, and ribs. She noted that it is too late for chemotherapy.
‘Get everything checked out’
In her post, Davis wrote: “A year and a half ago I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer, which has metastasized to my bones. Specifically to my spine, right hip, and my ribs. The cancer is incurable, and too late for chemo.”
She added: “The initial lump that I felt, wasn’t a ‘lump’ as such; rather a kind of hard spot. Really tiny. I almost didn’t bother getting it checked. So I guess I’m saying don’t ignore anything - get everything checked out.”
Davis, who starred alongside Ricky Gervais in The Office, also said she is trying to live her life “in as fun a way as I possibly can” and has found humour vital. “I asked my friends and family to make fun of me as much as possible (which they’re really good at), and most importantly of all to not treat me like a sick person,” she wrote.
Career and personal life
After The Office, Davis appeared in films such as Shaun of the Dead and Sex Lives of the Potato Men, and voiced Hayley Jordan in The Archers on BBC Radio 4. She later featured in US shows including Ugly Betty, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Reaper, and Family Guy.
In 2017, she played Etta Candy in Wonder Woman, and later starred as Hilda Spellman in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. More recently, she played Surge in the Disney Channel sitcom The Villains of Valley View, which ran for 37 episodes.
Davis married Welsh actor Owain Yeoman in 2006, with The Office co-stars in attendance. The couple divorced in 2011 after six years of marriage.
