A morning run along a popular Sydney coastline turned into a scene of violence on Thursday when a man allegedly launched a physical attack on a group of joggers.
Early Morning Assault on Running Group
The incident occurred near Clovelly Beach at approximately 7am, targeting members of the well-known Coogee Run Club. According to reports, a man wearing running gear allegedly bit and punched his way through the group. Twelve individuals were reportedly assaulted during the altercation.
New South Wales Police stated they were called to the scene of the alleged assault at around 6.50am. Officers subsequently arrested a man in connection with the incident. Police also allege that the man damaged a car prior to turning his aggression towards the running club members.
Club Leader Praises Brave Response
Tara Meakins, the head of the Coogee Run Club, confirmed the disturbing event in a public statement. She expressed relief that no one sustained serious injuries but acknowledged the trauma of the experience.
"Unfortunately there was a serious altercation between an individual, who experienced a mental health episode, and members of the run club," Meakins wrote. She went on to commend the swift actions of those present.
"I firstly want to acknowledge the members of the Coogee Run Club, as well as several members of the public, who stepped up to protect our community today," she said. "Your bravery and your willingness to act to keep our members safe is very much appreciated. From the bottom of my heart, I am so grateful for each and every one of you."
