Lucy Davis, best known for playing Dawn Tinsley in The Office, has revealed she is living with incurable stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to her bones. The 53-year-old actress said she does not know how long she has left but is determined to keep working, describing acting as “one of the biggest joys in my life”.
Diagnosis and vow to live life to the full
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Davis said she was diagnosed a year and a half ago with cancer that has metastasized to her spine, right hip, and ribs. She explained that the initial lump was “a kind of hard spot. Really tiny,” and urged others not to ignore anything: “get everything checked out.”
She wrote: “As of now, I'm trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can.” Davis, daughter of comedian Jasper Carrott, said humour has been “most vital” to her and asked friends and family to “make fun of me as much as possible” and not to treat her like a sick person.
Facing the future without fear
Davis said she is “not scared of whatever comes next” and finds comfort in the thought of being reunited with her dog Gracie, who died in 2024. “I'm at peace with it,” she wrote, adding that grieving will be harder for her family than for her.
Because pain can sometimes be “something else”, she now occasionally uses a wheelchair. She joked: “If you see me toddling around in one, feel free to give me a push.”
Continuing acting and animal rights work
The actress, who has long campaigned for animal rights – once posing nude for PETA against the British army’s use of bearskin hats – said she intends to carry on with that work and with acting. “I'm still going to keep up all my work for animal rights. It's so important to me. And I still would like to keep working. I'm perfectly able to do so, and acting is one of the biggest joys in my life.”
Davis rose to fame alongside Ricky Gervais and Mackenzie Crook in The Office, where her character Dawn finally got together with Tim (Martin Freeman) in the 2003 Christmas special. She later appeared in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Wonder Woman (2017), and Disney Channel’s The Villains of Valley View.

To others facing similar diagnoses, she wrote: “Cancer asks a lot from us, physically and mentally. And we all get to do it however we choose. Much love to you all.”
Davis, who has type 1 diabetes and received a kidney transplant from her mother in 1997, has also spoken openly about past struggles with bulimia. Fans reacted with dismay, with one saying: “How incredibly sad, 53 is no age at all.” Another offered hope: “I was diagnosed with incurable stage 4 cancer but I'm now in remission. I hope Lucy reads my comment. Don't give up and stay positive.”
