Death in Paradise Star Kimberley Nixon Reveals Secret Mental Health Battle
Actress Kimberley Nixon, best known for her roles in Death in Paradise and Fresh Meat, has bravely opened up about a secret two-year health battle that left her feeling she had completely "lost herself." The 40-year-old mother-of-one has revealed that she suffered from perinatal obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) following the birth of her son in 2020, a condition that became so severe she contemplated handing herself into police.
The Darkest Days of Perinatal OCD
Kimberley Nixon welcomed her son via IVF during the COVID-19 pandemic, but what should have been a joyful period quickly descended into turmoil. The actress, who has since been diagnosed with both Autism and ADHD (often termed AuDHD), developed perinatal OCD, a mental health condition characterized by intrusive obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors that can occur during pregnancy or within the first year after childbirth.
"That is the scariest thing that has ever happened to me," Nixon confessed during an emotional appearance on the I'm ADHD! No You're Not podcast. "Not knowing whether I could trust myself for like two years. I was like, where have I gone? Every time I went to speak to someone, I was just mum. Just mum, mum. I couldn't remember who I was. It was really brutal."
Fearing She Could Harm Others
At her lowest point, the television star experienced terrifying fears about potentially harming those around her. The obsessive thoughts became so overwhelming that she seriously considered turning herself in to authorities.
"I came downstairs and I just went, I'm gonna go to the police station," Nixon recalled. "And my husband was like, 'what are you gonna tell them?' That I could possibly in the future at some point do something bad."
She described the relentless nature of her symptoms, comparing them to "clockwork orange wouldn't stop," referencing the disturbing imagery from Stanley Kubrick's controversial film.
Public Revelation and Diagnosis
Kimberley Nixon first went public with her mental health struggles in June of last year, sharing her dual diagnosis of Autism and ADHD in an emotional social media post. Alongside a collage of photographs showing her crying what she called "happy tears," the actress wrote about finally understanding her neurological differences.
"I feel lighter than I have in a long time because instead of feeling like my brain is 'broken', I know now that it was just doing things differently all this time," she expressed to her followers. "I want to go back in time and give my younger self a catch and save her a lot of time and heartache."
The actress specifically thanked her fans for their support through her journey, writing: "From the midst of brutal Postnatal OCD through to today's diagnosis, a lot of you have been with me every step of the way. Thank you, thank you."
Career and Personal Life
Kimberley Nixon played bubbly travel presenter Catrina McVey in the popular BBC series Death in Paradise in 2019. Previously, she portrayed one of the main characters in Channel 4's comedy Fresh Meat, playing Welsh student Josephine "Josie" Jones, who studied dentistry at Manchester Medlock University and often struggled with social pressures and binge drinking.
The actress shares her son with husband Cai Howells, a camera operator who has been her partner for over two decades. Her revelation about perinatal OCD adds to growing awareness about maternal mental health conditions that affect many new parents but often remain hidden due to stigma and misunderstanding.
Nixon's candid discussion about her mental health battle highlights the importance of proper diagnosis and support for those experiencing perinatal OCD and related conditions. Her story serves as both a cautionary tale about the severity of postpartum mental health issues and an inspiring message about recovery and self-acceptance.
