The music world is in mourning following the tragic death of Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, the founding guitarist of the acclaimed experimental rock group Black Midi. He was 26 years old.
A Family's Heartbreaking Statement
A statement from his family, shared on the Instagram account of the band's former label Rough Trade Records, confirmed the sad news. It revealed he had been engaged in a long battle with his mental health before his passing.
'It is with deep sadness that we as a family regret to inform you that Matthew Kwasniewski-Kelvin has died after a long battle with his mental health,' the statement read. It described him as a talented musician and a kind, loving man who had 'finally succumbed; despite all efforts.'
The family included a poignant plea, urging people to 'take a moment to check in with your loved ones so we can stop this happening to our young men.'
A Talented Founder of a Groundbreaking Band
Kwasniewski‑Kelvin was instrumental in sparking Black Midi into life back in 2017. He teamed up with fellow BRIT School students Geordie Greep, Morgan Simpson and Cameron Picton to form what quickly became one of the UK's most discussed and innovative rock acts.
The band made a major impact with their frenetic debut single 'bmbmbm' in June 2018, released via producer Dan Carey's Speedy Wunderground label. They then signed with Rough Trade, releasing their widely praised debut album 'Schlagenheim' in 2019.
Stepping Back and a Band's Quiet End
In early 2021, it was confirmed that Kwasniewski‑Kelvin had stepped away from the band to prioritise his mental health. Consequently, he did not appear on the group's subsequent albums, 'Cavalcade' (2021) and 'Hellfire' (2022).
The story of Black Midi reached another conclusion in August 2024, when frontman Geordie Greep revealed the band had quietly come to an end, allowing members to pursue solo projects.
In its caption accompanying the family's statement, Rough Trade Records extended its deepest sympathy, calling Matt 'an incredibly talented person who will be truly missed.' The label also signposted support, encouraging anyone struggling to reach out to loved ones or charities like Mind, CALM and Samaritans.
