Hollyoaks Star Ali Bastian Details 'Brutal' Post-Cancer Treatment Regimen
Soap actress Ali Bastian, best known for her role as Becca Dean in Hollyoaks, has candidly shared the challenging aftermath of her breast cancer battle, describing the ongoing medication as 'brutal' and revealing how it has 'taken its toll' on her physical and mental wellbeing.
Diagnosis and Initial Treatment
Bastian was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer in 2024 after discovering a lump she initially believed was a blocked milk duct. The actress underwent a rigorous treatment protocol that included both chemotherapy and a mastectomy. By March 2025, she joyfully announced she was cancer-free, but her journey was far from over.
The Ongoing 'Brutal' Medication
In a recent interview with The Sun, Bastian opened up about the preventative medication she must continue taking to reduce the risk of recurrence. 'It's so brutal,' she confessed, expressing mixed emotions about the treatment. 'You're so grateful it exists, but at the same time it really takes its toll on your body, your mind, everything.'
She described feeling 'more broken down' than ever during the culmination of her chemo and mastectomy, leading to a profound identity crisis. 'I felt completely stripped back,' she shared, explaining how cancer affected every facet of her life.
Surgical Reconstruction Considerations
Bastian has previously discussed the possibility of breast reconstruction surgery following her mastectomy. Speaking on Giovanna Fletcher's Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast, she revealed that immediate reconstruction wasn't possible due to planned radiotherapy.
'Initially I was like 100 per cent it's happening,' she said about reconstruction. 'But now, I want to have the conversations and talk through what the options are, but I'm not actually married to any of them at the moment.'
Finding Comfort with a Prosthetic
Instead of rushing into further surgery, Bastian has found unexpected comfort with a bright pink prosthetic breast. 'I've got a really good prosthetic that makes a big difference,' she explained. 'It means in clothes I feel normal. It's bright pink. It makes me happy.'
She appreciates that the prosthetic doesn't attempt to mimic natural breast tissue, describing it as 'visually appealing' and something she can show her children. This has become an important psychological bridge in her recovery journey.
Personal Struggles and Grief
The actress's cancer battle coincided with profound personal loss, as her mother passed away in 2023. Bastian attempted to postpone her grief while undergoing treatment, but found this impossible. She shared on social media last year: 'Grief, I attempted to put on hold whilst I managed a grueling treatment regime now comes in waves, sometimes crashing, sometimes tidal, rarely gentle...'
Bastian, who left her regular role on Doctors in 2019 to focus on raising her two daughters, continues to navigate life after cancer while honoring her mother's memory.
Support and Awareness
By sharing her experience, Bastian hopes to raise awareness about the ongoing challenges cancer survivors face even after achieving remission. Her story highlights the complex physical and emotional landscape of post-cancer life, where gratitude for survival coexists with the reality of difficult ongoing treatments.
