Alfie Watts Drives Tuk Tuk to Norway for Charity

Race Across the World winner Alfie Watts is set to drive a Tuk Tuk from London to Norway to raise £100,000 for charity. The 22-year-old became the youngest champion of the show two years ago alongside his friend Owen Wood.

Alfie's Challenge on Good Morning Britain

Appearing on Friday's Good Morning Britain, Alfie discussed his upcoming challenge, which begins on May 24 and will last 31 days. A Tuk Tuk, also known as an auto rickshaw, is a three-wheeled vehicle commonly used in South Asia.

Alfie told hosts Kate Garraway and Ranvir Singh: 'I'm doing this to attempt to raise £100,000 for Young Minds, a charity I'm an ambassador for. I struggled with mental health when I was younger, and I attempted to take my own life at 16.'

He added: 'I want this project to be a beacon of hope. Everything's so depressing at the minute. I want to take the comedy of the Tuk Tuk and put it into a serious situation, having important conversations.'

Preparing for the Journey

Ranvir asked how Alfie is mentally preparing. He replied: 'It's going to be very lonely. I'll be six hours a day in the Tuk Tuk on my own.' Alfie plans to have people sign messages on the Tuk Tuk for support, with Kate Garraway being the first to do so.

Alfie also referenced Kate losing her husband Derek Draper in 2024 after a long battle with Covid. He told her: 'I fully bought into your story. As someone who lost a parent, your children are lucky to have you as a mum.'

Alfie's Travel Tips

Speaking to the Daily Mail last year, Alfie shared his best hacks for saving money while travelling. His first tip: don't rely on debit or credit cards abroad, especially outside Europe. 'Exchange money at home and always carry cash. ATMs abroad will fleece you.'

He also recommended comparing total holiday prices, not just flights and accommodation. 'Sometimes long haul is better. Flights to Thailand are £600-700, but accommodation can be £20 a night for luxury, and meals £2. Owen and I spent less on a week in Brazil than a week in Majorca, even with £750 flights.'

Lessons from Race Across the World

Alfie believes he and Owen could have saved more money if they did the trip again. 'I hate haggling, but on the show it's essential. We didn't haggle well enough, didn't hitchhike enough, and didn't brave crappy accommodations. We could have saved by sacrificing comfort.'
