Newborn Discovered at Fire Station Doorstep
A newborn baby boy, estimated to be less than 24 hours old, was found abandoned outside the South Tuggeranong ACT Fire & Rescue Station in Conder. The discovery was made at approximately 7.20am on Thursday, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Shocked firefighters on shift were alerted to the situation by a contractor working at the station who found the infant. ACT Fire & Rescue Superintendent Chris White confirmed the crew immediately brought the baby inside, provided care, and contacted emergency services.
Police Appeal for Mother's Whereabouts
ACT Policing Detective Superintendent Alex Nicholson has since launched a public appeal to locate the baby's mother. He revealed that following a tip-off from the public, investigators now believe a blue SUV was seen at the fire station before the baby was left.
Police are urging anyone with CCTV or dash cam footage of the area near Tharwa Drive and Drakeford Drive between 5am and 7.30am on Thursday to come forward immediately. The case reference number is 8228819.
Detective Superintendent Nicholson expressed significant concern for the mother's health, stating, 'The main concern for detectives is for the mother's health and wellbeing. I urge the mother to seek medical assistance.' He also confirmed the baby was 'left in a location where it could be cared for quickly' and is now in good health in hospital under emergency foster care arrangements.
Rarity of Incident Sparks Policy Discussion
This incident is regarded as highly unusual for the nation's capital. In its wake, questions were raised about the potential for American-style 'safe haven baby boxes' at local fire stations or hospitals.
However, an ACT Government spokesperson firmly stated that safe haven boxes are not used in Australia and there are no plans to install them. The spokesperson emphasised that the ACT provides a wide range of free healthcare and wellbeing supports for people experiencing pregnancy, making such boxes an inappropriate measure.
Locals are being asked to support the police appeal. Anyone who believes a friend or family member could be the mother is urged to encourage her to seek medical help or contact the authorities without delay.
