Sagrada Família Completed: Pope to Lead Opening Ceremony

The historic Sagrada Família church in Barcelona has officially completed its building works and is set for a momentous opening ceremony next month. Pope Leo XIV will lead the inauguration of the tower of Jesus Christ at the Catholic basilica.

Ceremony Details

The ceremony will take place on 10 June 2026, the 100th anniversary of the death of Antoni Gaudí, the renowned Spanish architect who designed the church. The Pope will bless the central tower in what is expected to be one of the most significant moments in the Sagrada Família's recent history.

As part of the event, a floral offering will be made at Gaudí's tomb in the crypt. In the evening, a Solemn Mass in tribute to Gaudí will be officiated by Pope Leo XIV. Musicians and choirs from across Catalonia will fill the basilica with their songs.

Attendees and Broadcast

The King and Queen of Spain, the president of the Spanish Government, and the president of Catalonia will attend. High-ranking clergy from Spain and abroad, including cardinals and bishops, have also been invited. The event will be the central moment of the Gaudí Year commemorations, which include 31 events scheduled between autumn 2025 and Christmas 2026, with a budget of €3.2 million (£2.77 million).

The Sagrada Família has donated 4,200 tickets for the event, distributed to the public through local parishes. More than 4,000 people will attend the Mass in person by invitation only. The celebrations can also be watched live on TV, social media, and screens placed around the city. An additional 4,000 invitations are expected for those following from outside the basilica.

Completion of Works

Building works on the tower of Jesus Christ began in October 2018. The final piece of the cross was installed on 20 February 2026. After 144 years since construction first began on the iconic building, it is now finally complete.
