The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued an urgent alert to older drivers across the UK, reminding them to renew their driving licence before it expires—or face being taken off the road.
Motorists aged 70 and over must renew their licence every three years, but many are unaware of the strict deadlines. Failure to act in time could result in an automatic revocation of driving privileges.
Why the Renewal Matters
Unlike younger drivers, whose licences are valid until they turn 70, older drivers must proactively renew theirs. The DVLA does not send physical reminders, meaning it’s the driver’s responsibility to stay on top of the deadline.
Julie Lennard, DVLA Chief Executive, emphasised: "Drivers must ensure their licence is up to date. If it expires, they risk penalties—including fines and even prosecution if caught driving illegally."
How to Renew Easily
The process is straightforward and can be completed online in minutes:
- Visit the official DVLA website
- Enter your driving licence number and personal details
- Pay the £14 fee (free for over-80s)
Alternatively, postal applications are accepted, though these take longer to process.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?
Driving with an expired licence is illegal and can lead to:
- A £1,000 fine
- Points on your licence
- Insurance invalidation
- Potential prosecution
