Cheadle Royal rated 'good' but safety concerns remain

Cheadle Royal Hospital in Stockport has improved its rating for young people mental health services from 'requires improvement' to 'good', according to the latest round of Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspections. However, inspectors found the wards were still in breach of regulations relating to safe care and treatment.

The CQC said staff at the hospital 'treated young people with compassion and kindness' and 'respected their privacy and dignity'. The latest inspection was carried out after the watchdog received "information of concern" about one of its wards.

Manchester City Council adult social care rated 'good'

Manchester City Council's adult social care department has been rated 'good' by the CQC, with frontline staff praised for 'empowering people to maximise their independence and achieve personal goals'. The score was the highest rating out of England's biggest cities outside of London.

Inspectors found feedback around safeguarding was 'mixed', with potential 'inconsistency' in practice. People with complex needs are currently more likely to wait longer and be provided with services outside the city boundary than those with less complex needs, the watchdog noted.

GP practices across Manchester receive 'good' ratings

The Whitswood Practice, in Whitswood Close, was rated 'good'. Inspectors said the GP service offered safe care and was 'visibly clean', with dedicated 'quiet clinics' for patients with autism and health checks for asylum seekers and refugees.

Borchardt Medical Centre, in Withington, also received a 'good' rating. Some 98pc of patients felt they were treated with 'care and concern', compared to a national average of 86pc. The practice achieved 99pc compliance at its most recent infection control audit, though inspectors found water temperatures below recommended levels and some out-of-date syringes and saline in the emergency drugs bag.

Cheetham Hill Primary Care Centre also scored 'good', with staff training up to date and appropriate recruitment practices followed. Care coordinators provided personalised support, including identifying patients with additional needs.

Stockport hospital improvements and remaining concerns

During the inspection on April 21, the CQC found a number of previously identified breaches had been resolved. However, the overall rating for the hospital, also known as the Priory Hospital Cheadle Royal, remains 'requires improvement'.

The CQC said staff "didn't always store medicines safely", putting some young people "at risk" of receiving out of date or incorrectly-stored medication. It also found staff "didn't always update risk records quickly enough after incidents".

A Priory spokesperson said: "We're pleased to see the 'Good' rating and the recognition for our child and adolescent mental health service in the CQC report. Importantly, the report highlights that young people experience 'consistently good' outcomes, are treated with 'compassion and kindness', and are happy with the care they are receiving. Since the inspection, we have taken further action to support colleagues with record keeping to ensure care plans are able to be updated quickly, and to improve medicine storage processes. We have shared these actions with the CQC."

Trafford and Wigan services rated 'good'

ABBI Clinic Manchester, based in Broadheath, was rated 'good' in its first ever CQC inspection. The service provides day care and outpatient support for people with eating disorders. Patients were 'overwhelmingly positive' about staff, with one saying they were "really sensitive during challenging times and really responsive when you need them".

Dr Ed Robinson Aesthetics, in Hale, also received a 'good' rating. 'Robust' assessments took place ahead of treatments, with 'cooling off periods' built in and a body dysmorphia questionnaire forming part of discussions about suitability.

Wigan PET Centre, at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, received a 'good' rating for its diagnostic imaging. Some 25 incidents occurred in the 12 months prior to the inspection, mostly relating to medicine leaks from a vein into the surrounding tissue. These were 'fully investigated and assessed', with radiation safety a 'key part' of the service.
