Love Island's Jacques O'Neill Quits Showbiz for New Career as a Carer After Hitting 'Rock Bottom'
Love Island's Jacques O'Neill finds new life as a carer

Former Love Island contestant Jacques O'Neill has revealed a dramatic and inspiring career change, stepping away from the showbiz world to become a carer after hitting 'rock bottom'. The 26-year-old, who was labelled the 'villain' of the ITV show's eighth season, has opened up about his journey from self-loathing to finding purpose.

From Rugby Pitch to Reality TV Villain

Jacques O'Neill's life was once defined by rugby. He described the sport as his entire identity, built on discipline and hard work. However, a series of injuries derailed his athletic career, leaving him feeling broken. When the opportunity to join Love Island in 2022 arose, he said 'yes' for what he now admits were the wrong reasons.

On the show, his behaviour towards partner Paige Thorne was widely criticised as 'toxic', earning him a negative reputation with viewers. He confesses he was not mentally or emotionally ready for the spotlight, calling himself a 'lost boy' full of anger.

The Dark Spiral After the Villa

Life after the villa was not the dream it appeared on social media. Despite the cars, travel, and brand deals, Jacques felt profoundly 'lost and empty'. He began to hate himself, turning to alcohol to cope on a weekly basis. This led to weight gain and a loss of fitness, a stark contrast to his former life as a professional athlete.

"Rock bottom was looking in the mirror and not knowing who I was anymore," he shared. "I was embarrassed of myself." He realised he could not continue living that way and knew a fundamental change was needed.

A New Purpose: 'They Saved Me'

The turning point came when Jacques began working as a carer for young people with disabilities. He now supports multiple clients, forming a particularly strong bond with a young man named Denum, whom he calls his best friend and little brother.

He credits this new role with giving him a reason to live and rebuild. "I started caring for these lads four times a week, they gave me a reason to show up again. They saved me," he stated emotionally. Through caring for others, he rebuilt his body, mind, and personal standards.

Jacques has now fully embraced his new path, declaring himself a resilient man who will never lose himself again. He shared his story to inspire others who are also in the process of rebuilding their lives, marking the start of a powerful new chapter far from the glare of reality TV.
