Charlie Harratt, a 34-year-old father known for his active and healthy lifestyle, has described the terrifying moment a ordinary day turned into a nightmare after a sudden stroke left him partially paralysed.
The fit and well construction site manager initially brushed off the symptoms as a severe migraine, a decision that nearly cost him his life. His story is a stark warning about recognising the critical signs of a stroke, which can strike anyone at any age.
A Life Changed in an Instant
Charlie's ordeal began with what he thought was a simple headache. "I felt a bit funny and had a headache coming on, so I thought it was just a migraine," he recounted. However, the situation rapidly deteriorated. He collapsed at home, and his frantic partner, Billie, immediately called for an ambulance.
Rushed to hospital, Charlie underwent a series of scans which revealed the devastating truth: he had suffered a major stroke. The event caused a brain haemorrhage and left him with a clot on his brain, resulting in paralysis on the left side of his body.
The Long Road to Recovery
Waking up in hospital completely paralysed was a profound shock. "I woke up and I couldn't move. I was completely paralysed. It was terrifying," Charlie said. The once independent father now faces the immense challenge of relearning basic tasks, from walking and talking to using his hands.
His recovery is a testament to his determination. Through intensive physiotherapy and unwavering support from his family, including his young son, Charlie is making gradual progress. His journey highlights the long and difficult path stroke survivors must walk.
