Heartburn or Something More Serious? How to Tell the Difference Between Indigestion and Life-Threatening Conditions
Heartburn warning signs you must not ignore

That burning sensation in your chest after a spicy meal might be more than just indigestion. While occasional heartburn is common, persistent symptoms could indicate serious health conditions requiring immediate attention.

When Heartburn Isn't Just Heartburn

Medical experts warn that frequent acid reflux symptoms may mask more dangerous conditions. "Many patients dismiss recurring chest discomfort as simple heartburn," explains Dr Sarah Jarvis, Clinical Director of Patient.info. "But when symptoms persist despite medication, it's time to investigate further."

Red Flags You Shouldn't Ignore

  • Chest pain radiating to arms, neck or jaw
  • Difficulty swallowing or painful swallowing
  • Unexplained weight loss accompanying heartburn
  • Vomiting blood or black stools
  • Symptoms persisting for more than three weeks

The Silent Threat: Oesophageal Cancer

Chronic acid reflux can lead to Barrett's oesophagus, a precancerous condition affecting about 1 in 10 people with long-term heartburn. Cancer Research UK reports approximately 9,300 new oesophageal cancer cases annually, with heartburn being a key early symptom.

Heart Attack Warning Signs

Cardiologists emphasise that heart attack symptoms in women and diabetics often mimic heartburn. "If your antacids aren't working and you feel unusually breathless, don't wait - call 999," advises British Heart Foundation's Medical Director.

When to See Your GP

  1. If over-the-counter medications stop being effective
  2. When symptoms wake you at night
  3. If you develop hoarseness or chronic cough
  4. When experiencing nausea with chest discomfort
  5. If you have risk factors like obesity or smoking history

The NHS recommends seeking urgent care for chest pain accompanied by sweating, lightheadedness or shortness of breath. Early intervention can be life-saving for both cardiac and cancer concerns.
