Yorkshire Wildlife Park: Tiger safe after fatal mauling

Yorkshire Wildlife Park has confirmed that Altai the tiger, who mauled a man to death in an enclosure yesterday, is safe and will not be euthanised. The park remains closed today while staff receive specialist support.

Incident details

The man reportedly jumped off a viewing platform into the tiger's enclosure before witnesses said they saw the animal dragging him away by the neck.

Park statement

In a statement posted to X, Yorkshire Wildlife Park said: "We would like to thank everyone who has expressed their concern following yesterday’s tragic incident. Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies remain with the family and loved ones of the man who sadly lost his life."

The statement continued: "The park will be closed today while the staff team who were deeply affected by events receive specialist support. Many, many people have contacted us about Altai, the tiger. We can reassure everyone that he is safe and well and will not be euthanised as a result of this incident."
