Wildlife expert's warning on tiger 'mistake' as man mauled to death

A man died on Saturday, October 11, after being attacked by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster. The individual entered an enclosure containing two Amur tigers and was fatally mauled, suffering severe wounds and being declared dead at the location.

Footage spreading across social media appears to show a man being clawed at and seized by a tiger within the park's enclosure. Officers stated they were conscious of the video and appealed for people not to circulate it.

Wildlife expert's past warning resurfaces

The devastating occurrence mirrors another deadly assault last year, when tiger keeper Ryan Easley was killed by an animal he had nurtured from a cub in Oklahoma. Reflecting on the American incident at the time, wildlife expert Forrest Galante outlined why a tiger's acquaintance with an individual doesn't necessarily reduce its danger, emphasising the unpredictable character of these creatures.

Discussing Ryan's death, he stated: "The tiger did not attack him maliciously or attack him viciously, it was simply a mistake". He continued to describe how "one little mistake", whether triggered by irritation or even an effort to display fondness, can become deadly.

"The difference with your house cat is it's a little scratch, but with a tiger it's just a poorly placed bite that can end someone like Ryan's life," he told News Nation. "That variable of unpredictability that large cats exhibit and the fact that that predator behaviour is there means you can never truly trust them," he added.

Park remains closed

He went on to say: "The unfortunate thing about it is it's not the tiger's fault, while the tiger may have given him a love bite, ultimately it was just poorly placed and it ended Ryan's life, it was just a cat being a cat."

Yorkshire Wildlife Park opened in 2009, with its 'Land of the Tigers' attraction welcoming visitors two years later, in 2011. Describing the experience on its website, the park states: "Take a spectacular walk along the 300 meter long raised walkway above 'Land of the Tigers' for the best views of these magnificent big cats. Witness the majestic cats freely roaming their woodlands and grasslands or playing in their very own waterfall pool."

Following the fatal incident, police addressed speculation about the tiger's condition, issuing a statement that read: "Regarding rumours surrounding the condition of the tiger, the animal was uninjured and remained in the enclosure following the incident and there is no wider risk to the public." Yorkshire Wildlife Park remains closed until further notice.
