Vets have issued an urgent warning to dog owners, highlighting that sausages are potentially toxic to pets. Experts at Pet MD caution that most kinds of sausage, including breakfast sausage, Vienna sausage, and all forms such as links, patties, and crumbles, are unsafe for dogs to eat.
Sausages contain ingredients that are not only unhealthy but also dangerous for dogs. They are typically made with minced meat, additional fat, and seasonings like garlic, which is toxic to dogs. Other additives are also not pet-safe.
Compared to plain meats like chicken or minced beef, sausages are much higher in fat and sodium. According to Pet MD, too much of either can lead to serious health conditions in dogs, such as pancreatitis. The experts advise that sausages should never be shared with dogs.
If a dog has eaten a large quantity of sausage and appears unwell, owners are advised to contact their vet immediately. While a small amount of plain sausage is unlikely to cause harm, there are healthier ways to boost a dog's protein intake.
Animal charity Blue Cross also warns that grapes, raisins, currants, chocolate, onions, avocado, and macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs. Caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea should also be kept out of reach.
