A vulnerable golden retriever, dependent on life-saving medication, was heartlessly abandoned in a freezing Canadian park with a note telling rescuers her owners would not return.
A Chilling Discovery in Okotoks
In late November, a passer-by made a shocking discovery at an off-leash dog park in Okotoks, Alberta. They found a sweet-natured golden retriever named Raiya, left with nothing but a jacket, boots, and her medication for seizures. Attached was a cruel note explaining that her owners were moving abroad and had chosen to abandon her rather than find her a suitable new home.
Temperatures in Okotoks during November can plummet to a bitter -8°C, making the act of abandonment not only callous but dangerously irresponsible. The Good Samaritan immediately took the shivering dog to SAVE - Southern Alberta Veterinary Emergency to ensure her immediate safety and wellbeing.
Rescue and Mounting Medical Challenges
From the veterinary clinic, Raiya was transferred into the care of Pauseforchange, a non-profit animal rescue service. The organisation confirmed that Raiya requires ongoing medication for her epilepsy and is now also believed to be suffering from hip dysplasia.
A spokesperson for Pauseforchange stated: "We are doing everything we possibly can to help Raiya thrive and help her to become medically clear, as currently, she is not. We will NOT be taking any adoption applications for her at this time until she is medically cleared and decompressed from her world being completely flipped upside down."
A Call for Support and a Future Home
The rescue is facing significant veterinary costs to give Raiya the healthy, pain-free life she deserves. Initial medical bills are estimated to be upwards of $2,000, with further treatment likely needed for her hip condition.
The team is now fundraising to cover these expenses. "If you would like to donate towards Raiya’s medical costs, we would be so appreciative," the spokesperson added. "We are doing everything we possibly can to ensure Raiya lives a long, happy, pain-free life with a forever family who will never abandon her."
The story has sparked outrage and sympathy, highlighting the severe consequences of pet abandonment and the vital work undertaken by animal rescue charities.
