Mysterious Peacock Named Pete Takes Up Residence in Guildford Suburb
A strikingly colourful peacock has unexpectedly made his home in a quiet residential neighbourhood in Guildford, Surrey, captivating residents with his daily appearances and bold behaviour. The bird, affectionately named Pete by locals, has been parading through gardens, tapping on windows, and even entering homes in search of food, leaving the community both delighted and puzzled about his origins.
An Unlikely Resident Appears
Pete was first spotted strutting proudly around Beechcroft Drive approximately six months ago, with his sudden arrival sparking curiosity and concern among homeowners. Despite numerous inquiries to wildlife charities, local parks, and nearby farms, no one has been able to determine where this majestic bird came from or how he ended up in this suburban setting. His presence has transformed the area, turning an ordinary commuter town into an unexpected wildlife haven.
Resident Jim Andy, 79, described the surreal moment he first encountered Pete: "I just opened the curtains and he was standing on the patio. I tried to feed him, but I didn't know what to give a peacock. We have tried to find out where he is from, but we don't know." Jim's wife Nicola Andy, 78, added: "He is amazing. He is here every day. He doesn't want to go apparently. He is our baby. If he is getting fed then he is quite happy. It is a shame he's on his own. He needs a friend. He is so beautiful."
A Varied Diet and Growing Popularity
While peacocks are typically opportunistic foragers known to consume plants, grains, seeds, berries, fruits, worms, and crops like tomatoes, Pete has developed a more eclectic palate thanks to his generous neighbours. Residents have been offering him an array of foods, including bird seeds, peanuts, and even ice cream wafers, creating a unique dietary routine for this suburban visitor.
The peacock's charming antics have endeared him to many locals, who have formed a dedicated WhatsApp group called 'Pete's Pals' to monitor his movements and share updates. Jenna Mackay, 36, explained: "He always comes to the glass doors and my dog barks at him and he puts his feathers up. He has been around for a while now. He is always at the back door pecking. He is quite funny. We have no idea where he came from, he just arrived one day."
Daily Routines and Community Concerns
Pete has established a regular routine, visiting various gardens throughout the day, with some residents reporting that he appears at their windows as if seeking companionship. Trish Tye, 60, noted: "He is coming increasingly often. I usually pop some peanuts out for him. I think we all give him different things. He always comes to the door and stares in, or he climbs up and looks at me through the window. It seems like he is looking for company."
Martin Dowland, a ten-year resident of the area, has observed that Pete particularly enjoys nibbling on his herb plants, making his garden a frequent stop. Martin shared: "He is semi-tame. He has taken a mince pie out of my hand before. He is quite cute as well. He just lounges around being elegant. He came in the back door the other day. He always comes and looks at us through the window."
Safety Worries Amid the Affection
Despite the widespread affection for Pete, some residents have expressed concerns about his safety in the urban environment. The neighbourhood's proximity to the busy A3 motorway poses a significant risk to the bird, who has been seen flying between gardens with his impressive wingspan. Martin Dowland admitted: "My cat is quite scared of him. I would rather he go home. Well, I say that, I want him to go, but I keep feeding him. I have a soft spot for him. I would like him to find somewhere that he is happy. It is quite dangerous here."
This sentiment reflects the community's mixed feelings: while they enjoy Pete's presence and have grown attached to him, they recognise that a residential area may not be the ideal long-term habitat for a peacock. The mystery of his origins adds to the complexity, as without knowing where he came from, it's challenging to determine the best course of action for his welfare.
As Pete continues his daily rounds, charming residents with his colourful displays and gentle demeanour, the people of Beechcroft Drive remain both his caretakers and detectives, feeding their unexpected guest while hoping to eventually solve the puzzle of his mysterious arrival in their midst.
