Monty Don has buried his dogs in the garden of his Herefordshire home, creating a permanent resting place for his beloved pets.
The Gardeners' World star, who has shared the screen with several of his dogs over the past decade, has established an idyllic burial site in the coppice of his garden.
Dogs buried in the coppice
In 2023, after losing his golden retriever Nell, Monty shared an update with fans: "At the end of October, my lovely dog Nellie finally ended her struggle with the cancer that she had been diagnosed with in June."
"She is now buried in the coppice alongside Nigel and the other six dogs that have been part of our family for the 32 years that we have lived here."
The 71-year-old, who resides in Herefordshire with his wife Sarah, has appeared alongside his golden retrievers Nigel, Nellie, and most recently Ned on Gardeners' World. His Yorkshire terrier, Patti, who died last year, also made occasional cameos.
A permanent part of the garden
Following Patti's passing in August 2025, it's likely that Monty and Sarah buried the terrier in the garden too.
"I have lived with dogs all my life, and so it is absolutely natural to me that wherever I am in the garden I should be accompanied by a dog or two. It is their garden as much as mine or any other member of the family," Monty writes on his official website.
"Something that I take for granted is that, by and large, they do absolutely no damage and respect the garden completely. They (rarely) dig holes or crash through the flower beds. They do treat the long paths as bowling alleys down which they career in chase of the ball that we are obliged to throw, but it is harmless enough."
Graves marked by headstones
The coppice holds the graves, marked by headstones, of Beaufort, Red, Poppy and Barry, as well as the two cats Stimpy and Blue.
"They all enriched our lives immeasurably, and are now all a permanent part of the garden that they loved," he noted.
"I've always had dogs; they are part of my life and part of my garden," Monty told The RHS in 2025.
