Robins are a familiar sight in UK gardens throughout the year, but they become especially prominent during winter as they do not migrate. These birds often struggle to find food when the ground freezes or fruit trees are bare, making supplementary feeding crucial for their survival.
Wildlife experts recommend offering high-energy foods such as sunflower hearts and mealworms. According to the Woodland Trust, mealworms are a particular favourite of robins. Sunflower hearts are also ideal as they are consumed quickly and leave no husks, reducing mess around feeders.
Bird food specialists Beaky Bites highlight the importance of high-energy seeds: “Black sunflower seeds are a high energy food that's easily accessible to birds. They provide the energy birds need for daily activities, especially during colder months and breeding season when energy needs peak.”
Peanuts are another excellent high-energy option, but gardeners are advised to avoid whole peanuts during the breeding season (March to August) as they can pose a choking hazard for young birds. Instead, offer peanut granules or use a rigid mesh feeder that allows birds to extract small pieces.
The RSPB warns against salted peanuts, which are harmful to birds, and advises buying nuts from reputable dealers to avoid aflatoxin, a toxic fungus. By providing the right foods, gardeners can help robins thrive through the spring and beyond.
