Putting a hedgehog house in the garden is a simple way to support hedgehogs through winter, offering them a weatherproof refuge as they prepare to hibernate. With habitat loss reducing shelter and food, these garden visitors need extra help more than ever.
Why Hedgehogs Need Shelter
Hedgehogs play a vital role in garden ecosystems, eating beetles, caterpillars and worms that might otherwise damage plants. During winter, they prepare to hibernate, though timing can vary as weather patterns shift. According to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS), hibernation may start in November, December or even January.
During this period, hedgehogs seek suitable areas to build their nests. A purpose-built hedgehog house, filled with straw and positioned in a secluded corner with leaves scattered near the entrance, provides a robust refuge. Outdoor Value stocks a house for £17.99, while B&Q offers one for £16.99, currently reduced to £14.44.
Protecting Garden Visitors
Purpose-built houses help protect against predators, though natural shelters can also be created using logs, leaves and compost. The RSPCA explained: "Hedgehogs are regular visitors to our gardens, with as many as 10 different hedgehogs travelling through in a single night. However, the UK's only spiny mammal species is in decline."
"A loss of natural habitat means less shelter and food is available for hedgehogs – which is why they need us more than ever," the RSPCA added. Providing a suitable refuge gives hedgehogs somewhere to rest, nest and hibernate.
Maintaining and Feeding
Keeping the hedgehog house secure and comfortable is essential. Replenish leaves near the entrance and position food away from the house, as hedgehogs prefer not to eat where they sleep. The RSPCA advises against disturbing any occupants. To check whether the house is in use, place a small twig across the entrance; if it has moved, a hedgehog has paid a visit.
Hedgehog numbers have been falling due to a shortage of natural food sources. As they prepare for hibernation, putting food out helps them build up reserves. Hedgehogs eat meat-based tinned cat or dog food, crushed cat or dog biscuits and fresh water in a shallow dish. Never leave out milk or bread, as they are lactose intolerant. Refresh and clean food and water bowls daily and dispose of any uneaten leftovers.
