A Florida woman has survived a terrifying mauling by a massive 300lb (136kg) black bear in her own backyard, fighting the animal off with her bare hands in a desperate struggle for survival.
The dramatic incident unfolded in the quiet community of Apopka, Orange County, when the woman was suddenly ambushed by the bear while in her garden. Wildlife officials confirmed this was one of the most severe bear attacks recorded in recent Florida history.
"She was literally fighting for her life with her bare hands," recounted a neighbour who witnessed part of the confrontation. "The bear had her on the ground and was attacking relentlessly."
Quick-thinking neighbours became the woman's unlikely saviours when they rushed to the scene with a garden hose, spraying the aggressive animal with water until it finally retreated back into nearby woodland.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers responded immediately, tracking and eventually euthanising the bear that evening. The animal was found to be in poor physical condition, which experts suggest may have contributed to its aggressive behaviour.
The victim sustained significant injuries to her head, neck, and arms during the attack and was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Medical staff confirmed she is expected to make a full recovery despite the traumatic experience.
This incident has sparked renewed concerns about human-wildlife conflicts in Florida, particularly in areas where urban development continues to encroach on natural bear habitats. Wildlife officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and take appropriate precautions, including securing garbage and removing other potential food sources that might attract bears.
Black bears, while typically shy and reclusive, have been increasingly spotted in residential areas across Florida as their natural habitats face continued pressure from expansion and development.
