The extensive search for missing bushwalker Peter Willoughby has entered its sixth day, with emergency services expressing growing concern for the 73-year-old's welfare in Tasmania's rugged southwest wilderness.
Willoughby was last seen on Wednesday afternoon near Lake Rhona, approximately 120km northwest of Hobart, when he became separated from his hiking companion, Daryl Fong. The two experienced bushwalkers were navigating the challenging Gordon River Road area when Willoughby fell behind and failed to reappear.
Race Against Time in Harsh Terrain
Police and emergency services have launched a major coordinated search operation, deploying ground teams, helicopters with thermal imaging capabilities, and all-terrain vehicles to scour the dense, remote landscape. Tasmania Police Inspector Michael Gillies described the conditions as "extremely challenging" due to the area's thick vegetation and difficult topography.
"We're dealing with very rugged, isolated country with limited access points," Inspector Gillies stated. "Our teams are working tirelessly, but the terrain is slowing progress significantly."
Family's Heartfelt Appeal
Willoughby's family has issued an emotional plea for information, describing him as an experienced bushwalker familiar with Tasmania's wilderness. His daughter emphasised that her father was well-equipped and knowledgeable about outdoor safety, making his disappearance particularly concerning.
"He knows this area, he's prepared for these conditions, which is why we're so worried," she told reporters. "We just want him home safe."

Search coordinators have focused their efforts on the last known location and likely routes Willoughby might have taken. The operation involves:
