Planting holly shrubs can help attract goldfinches and robins to your garden this winter, according to bird expert Tom Ferris, speaking on behalf of Roosty's. The plant offers natural shelter and berries that draw these familiar garden birds.
Why Holly Attracts Winter Birds
Ferris explained that autumn and winter are critical seasons for small garden birds like goldfinches and robins. He said: "With the right setup, you can transform your garden into a thriving winter refuge for these species."
Goldfinches, identifiable by their red faces and tuneful calls, have increased in numbers across the UK over the past decade. Sightings are particularly common from October through December, with Ferris noting that "these months mark a peak period for sightings." Robins are equally visible during the same timeframe.
Feeding Tips for Goldfinches and Robins
Regular feeding is essential for supporting both species. Ferris said: "Goldfinches are drawn to nyjer seeds and sunflower hearts, which provide the high-fat energy they need to withstand cold temperatures." He recommended placing a dedicated nyjer feeder in a sheltered, quiet spot.
Robins, which are fiercely territorial, prefer to forage closer to the ground. According to Ferris, they are omnivores that enjoy mealworms, suet, and crushed peanuts, especially during frosty spells when insects are scarce.
To help both species through winter, Ferris advised prioritising consistent feeding schedules and cleaning feeders weekly to prevent disease.
