A burst sewage pipe near Deganwy beach sent a foul smell across the area and led to a leak close to the coastal path, prompting a cordon and a swift response from Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water.
The rupture was discovered near the beach, leaving what was described as a disgusting smell hanging in the air. Three tankers were brought in and the area was fenced off, although walkers could still reach the coastal paths around the cordoned section. Engineers worked throughout Monday to repair the damaged pipe.
Resident describes the smell and response
A Deganwy resident, who requested anonymity, told North Wales Live about the incident. He said: "I came over the grey bridge and saw a tanker by Deganwy promenade. Another one was driven to the same spot soon afterwards, followed by a third.
"There were men in orange fluorescent jackets peering into a hole. By the smell of it there had been a burst sewage pipe. It smelt disgusting.
"I hope there isn't too much environmental damage. But the good thing was there seemed to be plenty of resources on hand. The men seemed to be getting on with sorting out the problem. Hopefully it was just a one off and it can be resolved quickly."
Welsh Water apologises and confirms repair
Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water issued an apology to customers over the incident, stating it had responded swiftly to resolve the problem and minimise any environmental impact. A spokesperson said: "We have identified a burst on a sewer pipe in Deganwy, Conwy. Our crews acted quickly to isolate the damaged section of pipe to minimise the effect on the local environment.
"The team is on site and has dug down to carry out an emergency repair as quickly as possible. Tankers are being used to remove wastewater from West Shore pumping station to ensure there is no impact on the service we provide customers.
"The matter has been reported to Natural Resources Wales who are being kept fully updated. We would like to apologise for any disruption this may cause."
Welsh Water later confirmed the rupture was mended Monday afternoon.
Regulator monitoring the situation
A Natural Resources Wales (NRW) spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a burst pipe near the coastal path between Llandudno and Deganwy yesterday and have been liaising closely the operator since.
"The pipe has been repaired and is being tested to ensure it is operating normally. We continue to monitor the situation to ensure the operator is taking all appropriate measures, and the environment is protected."
