With the UK experiencing another heatwave, many are looking forward to garden BBQs and gatherings. However, discovering rubbish scattered across the lawn after foxes or seagulls have raided the bins can be a frustrating start to the day.
A TikTok user known as 'The No1 Binman', a self-proclaimed 'binfluencer', has shared a straightforward trick to deter these pests. In a video responding to a viewer's question, he outlined effective methods for keeping animals away from food bins.
The simplest tip is to ensure all food waste is sealed in bags before placing it in the bin, as this reduces odours that attract pests. Another lesser-known hack involves placing an empty milk container filled with water on top of the bin lid. The binman explained: "That will stop the foxes." The light reflecting off the water disorients foxes, which are primarily active at night, causing them to avoid the area.
He also noted that most binmen will return the container to the bin after emptying it, preventing it from being blown away. Additionally, the location of the bin matters. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight, as heat accelerates decomposition, attracting seagulls, maggots, and flies. Instead, store bins in shaded spots with lids securely fastened.
