As summer arrives, the risk of rats and mice invading homes increases, as the warmer months provide ideal conditions for breeding and nesting. Failing to take preventive measures can lead to costly infestations and health risks. However, an inexpensive kitchen staple may offer a natural solution.
According to DIY expert Glen Peskett from Saxton Blades, garlic is an effective deterrent. “Rats rely heavily on their sense of smell to navigate and find food. Garlic, with its strong sulfur compounds, overwhelms their sense of smell and makes them feel disoriented,” he explained. These compounds are also associated with toxic substances, naturally repelling rodents.
Garlic is budget-friendly, with a four-pack costing just 87p from Asda—around 22p per bulb. To use it, place cloves near entry points such as basements, garages, kitchens, and lofts, particularly around gaps and doorways. Garlic oil, cayenne pepper, and apple cider vinegar are also effective repellents.
In addition to repellents, minimising clutter and securing food waste are crucial. Ensure bins are sealed, empty them frequently, and clean up spillages promptly. Inspect for cracks beneath doors or vents and seal them, as even tiny openings can allow rodents to enter.
