The UK has a new favourite dog, with the goldendoodle topping the list of the most popular breeds, according to new data from the pet marketplace Pets4Homes. The cross between a golden retriever and a poodle attracted an average of 886 viewers per advert on the site, surpassing the golden retriever which came second with 701 views, and the Maltipoo—a Maltese and poodle mix—in third with 697 views.
The figures, based on two million weekly visitors, indicate that the pet market has returned to pre-pandemic levels after a surge during Covid lockdowns. While English bulldogs are the most expensive breed, selling for an average of £1,704, they are closely followed by chow chows at £1,694 and golden retrievers at £1,494.
French bulldogs, previously the most popular breed, have seen a dramatic decline, with rehoming numbers down 47.6% in the first half of 2023 compared to 2022. Similarly, English bulldog rehoming fell by 49.6%. Researchers attribute this to increased awareness of health issues in flat-faced breeds, such as breathing difficulties and dental problems.
Breeds currently over-represented in shelters include retired racing greyhounds, Staffordshire bull terriers, and German shepherds. Pets4Homes CEO Axel Lagercrantz noted a 'new normal' in the pet sector, with supply and demand realigned and prices rising for the first time since 2021. He also highlighted a 27% reduction in animal welfare reports due to improved verification technology.
