Gardening expert Monty Don has advised people to continue feeding birds this April, using common kitchen scraps such as cheese flakes and breadcrumbs. In his April 2024 blog, Don emphasised that conventional bird food is not essential, as most households already have suitable items.
“Most birds will be nesting and laying eggs and hatching young over the course of the month,” Don wrote. “Keep putting out food if you have any. Flakes of cheese and breadcrumbs are good if you do not have access to conventional bird food.” He also highlighted high-energy options like fat, peanuts and sunflower seeds.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) recommends placing feeders in quiet, sheltered spots away from predators but close to cover. “Not too close to bushes where predators could hide in wait, but close enough to cover so that birds can easily dart away,” the RSPB advises. Cleanliness is also key to prevent disease.
Don’s call to action comes as birds face high energy demands during nesting and rearing season, when natural food is scarce.
