Drivers Face £120 Fines for Entering Five UK Clean Air Zones
Drivers Face £120 Fines in Five UK Cities This Summer

Motorists could be slapped with hefty fines for driving into five UK cities this summer, with penalties reaching up to £120 for failing to pay Clean Air Zone charges. The fees apply to polluting vehicles entering designated areas in Birmingham, Bath, Bradford, Bristol, and Sheffield.

Clean Air Zone Charges and Penalties

Clean Air Zone fees are daily charges imposed on drivers of higher-emission vehicles to use certain roads. Non-payment results in penalty charge notices. In Birmingham, the daily fee is £8, but failing to pay on the day incurs a standard penalty of £120, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.

Bath also imposes a £120 fine for non-payment, with a 50% discount for early settlement. Bristol issues a 'Charge Certificate' increasing the original amount by 50% for those who do not pay. Sheffield issues Penalty Charge Notices for non-compliance.

Expert Warning for Summer Drivers

Mo Rafique, vehicle security expert at Motor Guards, warned that many drivers are unaware they have entered a Clean Air Zone. He said: "A lot of people are driving into these cities for shopping trips, concerts, weekends away or family visits and don't even realise they've entered a Clean Air Zone."

He added that overreliance on sat navs can backfire, as most systems do not warn drivers about upcoming charges. "People trust their sat nav completely now. But most systems won't actively warn you that you're about to enter a chargeable Clean Air Zone, which is why so many drivers only realise afterwards," Rafique explained.

Financial Impact on Families

Rafique noted that summer budgets are already stretched, and unexpected fines can be frustrating. "For a lot of families, summer budgets are already stretched enough as it is. So picking up a £60 fine after a weekend away can feel incredibly frustrating, especially when people genuinely didn't realise the rules applied," he said.

Drivers confused about the charges can find information on each council's website. Clean Air Zones operate 24/7, 365 days a year, meaning penalties apply at all times.
