Leazes Park in Newcastle city centre has been named one of the best parks in the UK, retaining the prestigious Green Flag award for 2026. The park is one of 32 in the North East and one of four in Newcastle to receive the accolade, which is awarded by Keep Britain Tidy.
Park's Significance and Visitor Experience
Described by visitors as 'an oasis in the middle of the city', Leazes Park offers an abundance of wildlife and green spaces just minutes from the RVI, St James' Park, and the bustling city centre. The park won back the award in 2025 after losing it in 2023, prompting an outcry from the community.
Councillor Peter Lovatt of Newcastle City Council said: 'We are delighted to have maintained these four Green Flags for 2026. I'd like to thank all those who have played a part, no matter how small, in ensuring these parks are among the best in the world.'
Community Voices and Concerns
Visitors praised the park's tranquility. One woman from Longbenton, feeding the birds, said: 'It's so peaceful here. There's not many lakes around so it's nice to have this.' Carol and David Young from Darlington, visiting for dental hospital appointments, described it as their favourite park in Newcastle. Carol expressed concern over potential stadium expansion: 'I hope they don't end up building a stadium at the top of the park. They can put a stadium anywhere, why should it be in the middle of the town?'
Joseph Dessi, a local resident, said: 'It's nice and calm. Its position is interesting being smack bang in the middle of the city. It's not what you'd expect.'
Angling Association and Calls for Investment
Mark Milen from the Leazes Park Angling Association, which recently celebrated its 52nd year, highlighted the park's wildlife and fishing opportunities. He noted: 'Friends visit from as far as Essex just to fish in the lake. The biggest fish I've ever caught here was a 29lb carp with a dog biscuit.' However, he called for more investment, saying the boathouse and cafe should be reopened.
Over 2,000 parks nationally have been recognised in the annual Green Flag Awards. Newcastle United has been in talks about potentially expanding St James' Park or building a new stadium, with Leazes Park mentioned as a possible location, but the club insists no final decision has been made.
