A viral home hack claims that two common kitchen items—table salt and boiling water—can kill weeds instantly. In a video shared on Instagram by a user named Neal, she demonstrated the method on weeds growing between slate tiles on her patio. She stated that she poured the mixture on the weeds a few days prior, and they were already dried out and dead.
How the Mixture Works
The mixture consists of roughly one to two parts salt to three parts boiling water. The hot water shocks and cooks the plant tissue, while the salt permanently dehydrates the weed, preventing it from absorbing water. For best results, apply on a sunny day with no rain in the forecast, as rainwater can wash away the salt before it takes effect.
Where to Use and Precautions
This method should only be used on weeds growing in paving slabs, gravel, or other areas without desirable plants. It will kill any vegetation in the soil, including flowers or crops. Wear closed-toe shoes, trousers, and gloves to avoid scalding from hot water splashes.
Alternative Natural Weed Killers
Other natural solutions include pouring boiling water directly onto weeds, using household vinegar (or stronger horticultural vinegar) to burn young weeds, and manual removal by hand or hoeing. Mulching with wood chips or landscape fabric can also block sunlight and prevent weed growth.
